I have a three-year-old daughter, ergo I have a princess-obsessed little girl living under my roof. We read the stories everyday and I kind of throw up in my mouth every time. The stories always follow the same general plot: poor, innocent girl is wronged (usually by a wicked woman), girl gets in some sort of terrible predicament, girl is saved by prince and lives happily ever after. Yeah, complete bullshit.
I was having this conversation with another MOG (mother of girls) a few weeks back and she (thanks, Regina!) told me about a series of photos called Fallen Princesses. I found them and had to share them with you in case you haven’t seen them. Created by a mother of three-year-old girls, Dina Goldstein was pretty fascinated by the Disney Princess spell that seems to overcome every young girl in the US. Below is what is written on Dina’s website:
Fallen Princesses place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.
I have gone ahead and reposted some of the images below. You can see she’s even altered a few of the Princesses’ names. Snowy and her predicament has to be my favorite…
SNOWY

CINDER

BELLE

ARIEL

JASMINE AT WAR

Heavy stuff, huh? To see more Fallen Princesses, visit Dina’s site. fallenprincesses.com

Good. Why is it always a woman who is the “bad guy”?? No wonder women have so many challenges networking and supporting each other in the workforce. There must be a better fantasy that our girls can grow up with!!
Thanks for bringing this up….and good luck with your three year old!

I believe that at least eighty percent of girls in America are living in the dream of having a fairy tale life. They believe one day the fairy godmother would bring everything to them. They believe that without high education, they could also find a good job that has less pressure but earns big money. So there are lots of girls want to be the models and actresses, they do not know the hardships of being these people, they just know that they could earn a lot and look beautiful.
As lots of girls are dreaming of having a good job, there are more girls dreaming of having a golden bachelor to be their boyfriend and one day he would propose to her. Then the fairy tale of Cinderella comes true. Though it is stupid, but I believe that if they could, girls would like to have a rich man as the husband. They read too many fairy stories in their childhood so they believe that they are the beautiful princesses and only the noble prince could marry them. Some of them join the spinsters’ club because of their daydreaming. And even when they wear the rubber wristbands with the word “Marry Me” in the spinsters’ party, they are still waiting for the Prince Charming.
Sometimes I think that with fairy tales, kids could have a beautiful memory of their childhood and have a wonderful vision for the real world, but with too many fairy tales, an adult could be useless for this society because of his or her daydreaming. They would leave things and wait for fairy godmother to deal with them. They would wait for the opportunity to fall from the heaven and hit dead against them. This thought would destroy their life and kill them one day. Shall we stop telling fairy stories to kids?

I love these so much.
I struggled with the whole Princess thing too. The more modern princesses like Mulan (my favorite because she was a stud) and even Belle are much more easy to digest for me. I liked them.
What I DON’t like and never supported was the whole “Oh, honey you’re a princess” thing (not to be confused with the Disney Princesses which she dressed up like and wached all the time). I’m not making sense, okay, it is the idea of raising a princess. That’s it. I hated that idea. Who wants to raise a girl to be a princess–what a pain in the @ss. A queen maybe….

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such great information being shared freely out there.
