Treehugger Tuesday – Safer Sunscreens. When Crisco is Not an Option.

Posted by Andrea on May 5th, 2009. Filed under: sunscreen, treehugger tuesday.

We live in Southern California, so sunscreen is a product we use almost daily (well, we should be anyway). I had questioned what’s in sunscreen but didn’t really think too hard about it until I saw Safe Mama’s Safer Sunscreen Cheat Sheet, which I encourage you to download. I’m not at all surprised that the everyday sunscreens I’ve been slathering onto my kids since they were babies are chock full o’ chemicals that are potentially harmful. Seems like everything else nowadays is full of bad stuff, why not sunscreen too? Nothing like covering your kids in parabens, phthalates, propylene gycol, synthetic fragrances and a bevy of other ingredients that looked like they can’t possibly be spelled correctly to make you feel like a good parent.

I love Blue Lizard, which is highly rated as being safe and effective. It seems just like the California Baby SPF30 to me, but costs much less.

I also like the California Baby face stick, which does leave my kids looking a little vampirish, but it’s worth it because they actually stand still when I put it on. Usually.

It is a great and informative article. I like the quote at the end. Take a look at the issue of dangerous debt as a possibility to be informed and grow.
