Treehugger Tuesday: To Eat Organic or Not To Eat Organic? That is the Question…

Posted by Andrea on March 24th, 2009. Filed under: organic, treehugger tuesday.

I am continually concerned by the chemicals lurking on and in our food. I don’t necessarily trust the FDA and I think that over time all of the gunk they spray onto our fruits and vegetables, which we ingest, is going to have some sort of adverse effect on our health and that of our children. Yet, I have a really hard time bringing myself to spend extra money on organic produce.  I totally buy it when it’s on sale or if the price difference between it and the chemical-laden option is close enough, but I am not one of those “100% organic” mommies. Shame on me? I guess…but what else is new?

Anyway, I did some research and wanted to share what I found out.  The Environmental Working Group put together a full list of produce ranked based on the “pesticide load”.  A list of the top 12 most pesticide-loaded and top 15 least pesticide-loaded is below:

Dirty Dozen – Buy These Organic

  1. Peach
  2. Apple
  3. Bell Pepper
  4. Celery
  5. Nectarine
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Kale
  9. Lettuce
  10. Grapes (Imported)
  11. Carrot
  12. Pear
Clean Fifteen – Lowest in Pesticides (so you can get away with buying the non-organic versions)
  1. Onion
  2. Avocado
  3. Sweet Corn
  4. Pineapple
  5. Mango
  6. Asparagus
  7. Sweet Peas
  8. Kiwi
  9. Cabbage
  10. Eggplant
  11. Papaya
  12. Watermelon
  13. Broccoli
  14. Tomato
  15. Sweet Potato
It seems the foods we eat the most of in my house are the most pesticide-heavy. Figures!
