Lately, more than ever, I’m trying really hard to support my local economy. It’s those local shops and vendors that make America unique, and this economic downturn is tougher on them than on the big guys. I look around Laguna Beach and Dana Point, and see all of these unique establishments closing their doors. These quaint towns are losing their local flavor. It makes me absolutely crazy! I can’t stand how homogenized America has become – Target, Wal-Mart, Chili’s, Macaroni Grill. Anytown, USA. Each town looks the same. How frickin’ boring and lame!
In addition to shopping at local stores, you can also buy your food from local farmers. LocalHarvest.org is a site that allows you to easily locate places to purchase locally grown food. Just type in your zip code and find a local farmer near you. Here’s what Local Harvest says about buying locally grown…
Why Locally Grown?
People worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier and more nutritious. It is also good for your local economy–buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business.
Another reason is that if you buy locally it reduces the fossil fuels burned getting produce from, say, Latin America, to the US. That reason is a bit more of a stretch for me, but if demand for foreign produce was reduced enough, it would certainly have an impact.
I’m going to head over to my local farmer this week and will check it out…Will an Orange County pepper taste as good as a Chilean pepper? If the Orange County pepper is any reflection of where it was grown, it will be taught, voluptuous and wrinkle-free.
