In case you missed it, yesterday Obama signed into legislation the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. It was the first bill he signed since becoming President of the U. S. of A.
Lilly Ledbetter worked as a supervisor for Goodyear Tire in Alabama for 19 years and once she was about to retire, she found out her male counterparts were making much more than she was for the same job. She tried suing Goodyear for the difference in wages, but her case was denied by the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision because she waited over 180 days from finding out about the discrepancy to bring the issue to court. She will never see a dime from Goodyear. This new equal pay legislation changes the statute of limitations for filing a claim against an employer suspected of unfair pay.
My favorite part about the entire thing was what Obama said afterward (taken from the NY Times):
He said was signing the bill not only in honor of Ms. Ledbetter — who stood behind him, shaking her head and clasping her hands in seeming disbelief — but in honor of his own grandmother, “who worked in a bank all her life, and even after she hit that glass ceiling, kept getting up again” and for his daughters, “because I want them to grow up in a nation that values their contributions, where there are no limits to their dreams.
