There are changes happening at Hip Moms Who Work in 2009. The biggest of which is an all-new custom blog design. I’m really excited. I have been on the waiting list at Delicious Design Studio since September. I know it’ll be worth the wait, though. I love Jess’ designs. I just have a couple of decisions to make before she gets started.
Here’s my issue, in addition to hipmomswhowork.com, I also own the url hipmomsblog.com. Most of you know, I started this blog you’re reading now totally without thinking (I honestly just wanted to see how easy it was to set up a blog. I found out it is super-damn easy. And that’s why every Tom, Dick and Moron (me included) has one.). Although my content occasionally skews toward the working mom, I feel like at least 90% can apply to almost any mom. Let’s face it, whether you stay at home or work outside the house, we moms ALL work our effin’ asses off. I would definitely still post some content targeted to moms who work outside the home (maybe I would have a special section for this stuff. dunno.), but the blog itself would have a more general name.
What should I do? Do I keep this hipmomswhowork.com or do I go to hipmomsblog.com? I usually get paid to make these sorts of decisions, but because I’m so close to this, I am a little torn between the two options. I like the differentiation the current url gives me, but I like the flexibility the more general title provides. I dunno. I also need to look further into what this will do to my page rankings on Google search. This internet stuff is messy.
Can you please comment below and let me know what you think? Help!

I’d say that the Hip Moms Who Work is good because it differentiates you from the many many mom blogs out there. But if you aren’t passionate about writing specifically for working moms, then the more general URL might be the way to go. They’re both short, sweet, and easy to remember. Can’t wait to see the re-design. Maybe you’ll inspire me to finally give Fun Finds For Mom a facelift!

And I am going to track the other way from Elaina… I say go for the HipMoms blog…that way you suck in all those at-home moms who are missing out on this righteous site thinking it is for “working outside the home” moms! Ahh.. decisions, decisions.

I absolutely, positively agree with…BOTH of you, Elaina and Lysanne! I wonder if there’s a way to somehow maintain both URLs but have them still come to one site…Or do I maintain two blogs and duplicate content? And, did I mention I’m starting a marketing blog too? So much for trying to simplify my life in ’09!

Which ever way you go, you can just point the one you decide not to go with to the one you do decide to go with, so you don’t lose any visitors…. or market both and have it point to this one blog. Not too many people end up looking at the address name and the names are so similar not many may catch it… did that make sense at all to you?

Yes, you mean having a redirect basically from one to the other…Right?
