I’m not sure I buy the argument that technology has made us more productive. Busier, yes. Productive, not so much. I should be working right now but what am I doing? Writing this post with the help of my good buddy, Tech Nology.
A study released a few weeks ago claims that employees piss away 25% of their work time goofing off online. Some estimates say that the loss in productivity costs companies upwards of $200 billion dollars a year. Damn! The same study also said that 80% of emails sent by volume in the workplace are personal. When are we laying off the Facebook and Ebay and working, people?!
What cracked me up the most about this study is the company who conducted it, Voco, also noted that many of the pre-release downloads of Hellboy: The Golden Army were over corporate internet connections. Can’t you just picture the stuffed shirts of corporate America in their button-downs and tassled loafers (I just cannot stand tassled loafers) downloading Hellboy - that dude with the red painted face and little nubbins growing out of his head? I realize it was probably programmery-type people, but the thought of it being a more stereotypical working stiff makes me giggle on the inside. Doesn’t take much to make me laugh…
Well, my 25% is officially up. I gotta get back to work, right after I do a quick look-see at what my friends are up to on Facebook…
