Worried Mom Tip – Harmful Plastics Report Part II

Posted by Andrea on October 9th, 2008. Filed under: BPA, Bisphelanol-A, plastic, product safety.

Last week I posted an entry (Worried Mom Tip – Plastics Division) about the chemical BPA and its potential leaching into our food and drink. I have received some positive feedback on the post, and since there were a few things I purposely left out to reduce the length of the original post, I thought I would do a quick follow-up.

One of the first things I want to mention is that clear, plastic Avent Original Airflex Feeding Bottles contain BPA. I used these bottles – as did most of my friends – to feed our kids when they were babies/toddlers. No idea what impact this has had on my kids…I guess if my daughter gets her period before she starts kindergarten I’ll know it caused some damage. Seriously, it’s no laughing matter.  I want you to know about this in case you or someone you know is still using the hard clear plastic baby bottles. Good news is that Avent has finally started making a BPA-free plastic bottle.  To understand which Avent products contain BPA and which do not you can check out this document.  For an extensive list of BPA-free bottles, sippies and food storage items, go to this page at SafeMama.com. Also, you can visit TheSoftLanding.com - a site that only carries BPA-free products. It’s a great one-stop shop for worry-free shopping.

In my previous post I told you that I had ditched all of my kids’ melamine plates. Melamine is the chemical that was found in the Chinese baby formula responsible for a series of infant deaths in China. It is also what was found in the pet food that killed all of those dogs and cats in the Spring of 2007. The melamine plates and cups we’ve all been using are made by combining the organic compound melamine with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin. The FDA claims that products made from melamine resins are safe. However, when it comes to our children, I believe in erring on the side of caution. Melamine is in those plates and cups. I have gotten rid of my melamine plates and replaced them with Corelle. You could also replace with them with plates and cups made of stainless steel or bamboo. If you choose not to replace yours you should not microwave them (heats releases the melamine into food) and you should only hand wash them.  If you want to read more about melamine in food vs. plates, I found a good blog post on TheSoftLanding.com’s blogsite.

I was feeling kinda guilty about leaving this info out of the last post. Since it seems like some of you out there are paying attention to the info in my lil’ ol’ blog, I wanted to make sure you knew about this stuff too.

I promise that my next post will be far less serious….

I am clearly obssessed with this topic lately but had to tell you that I love Corelle- never heard of it but checked it out at Walmart and it is awesome. I worried that Luke might balk at not using his cute firetruck/airplane plates that were melamime, but he likes using plates like mom and dad. Did I also tell you that I have yet to view your blog without making some sort of purchase as a direct result? Josh rues the day he told me about your blog. haha luckily i don’t visit it every day.

I grew up on Corelle. My parents use it to this day. It’s so practical. I wonder if the company even knows that parents are turning to Corelle as an alternative? They need to start making kid patterns…
